How to Prepare Your Car for Long-Distance Towing
Anthony Moffo · Owner, Moffo's Towing and Repair
Whether you're relocating, buying a vehicle from out of state, or transporting a car you can't drive yourself, long-distance towing is a different experience than a quick local tow. A little preparation on your end makes the process smoother and helps avoid surprises along the way.
Preparation Checklist
Before pickup day, work through these steps:
- 1Clean out the vehicle — remove personal belongings and loose items in the trunk
- 2Document its condition — photograph the vehicle from multiple angles before loading
- 3Check fluid levels and tire pressure — for safe loading and correct sitting on the flatbed
- 4Disable alarms — or share the fob/code with the driver
- 5Confirm pickup and delivery details — exact addresses and timeframe
Clean Out the Vehicle First
Items left inside can shift during transport, and valuables are best kept with you rather than left in a vehicle that will be out of your hands for the duration of the haul.
Document the Vehicle's Condition
Take clear photos of your vehicle from multiple angles, including any existing dings, scratches, or wear, before it's loaded.
Clear before-and-after photos give you and the transport company the same reference point if any question comes up later.

Even though the vehicle won't be driven during transport, proper tire pressure helps it sit correctly and load safely on a flatbed. If the vehicle runs, having adequate fuel (generally a quarter tank is plenty) and no active fluid leaks makes loading and unloading cleaner and easier for the driver.
Disable Alarms and Aftermarket Devices
Watch Out for Alarm Drain
An alarm triggered repeatedly during a long-distance haul can drain the battery and create unnecessary complications at delivery.
Confirm Pickup and Delivery Details in Advance
Long-distance transport works best with clear communication upfront — confirm the exact pickup address, delivery address, and expected timeframe before the truck arrives. This avoids delays and ensures someone is available on both ends to hand off and receive the vehicle.
Choose a Company Experienced with Distance Hauls
Not every towing company handles long hauls the same way local tows are handled. Moffo's Towing and Repair offers dedicated long and short distance towing from our base in Lake City, with flatbed equipment and route planning built for extended transport rather than just quick local pickups.
A little preparation before pickup day goes a long way toward a smooth, worry-free long-distance tow — and gives you confidence your vehicle will arrive exactly as it left.
